The short answer
Check more than one sound source at a comfortable volume. Media, alerts and calls give different clues. A case, an audio setting or a call connection can affect what you hear.
Read the diagram as text
- Media. Does a familiar clip sound clear?
- Alerts. Can you hear the alert sound setting?
- Calls. Is the problem only during calls?
- Observation. Note volume, distortion and affected source.
Name the sound that is missing
Start with a sentence such as: "Videos play normally, but callers sound faint at my ear." That is more informative than "the speaker is bad." Include whether you hear crackling, a rattle, low volume or complete silence.
Choose familiar audio without unusually quiet recording levels. Increase volume gently rather than using maximum volume as a stress test. If an accessory is receiving the audio, make that part of your notes so you are not comparing different listening devices without realising it.
Check alerts separately from playback
Apple's sound troubleshooting guide covers Silent mode, Focus settings and the Ringtone and Alerts control. These checks help distinguish an alert setting from a broader audio complaint.
A phone can be configured to avoid interrupting you while still playing a video. If the issue is missed notifications rather than distorted playback, describe the notification and whether it appears on screen. Do not assume every silence is a damaged loudspeaker.
Inspect the outside without digging
Remove an easily removable case if it covers an opening. Look under good light without pressing or scraping. For the receiver or speaker opening, Apple specifies a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush when cleaning is needed.
This is not a reason to probe deeply, add liquid or force a sharp tool into the phone. If there is broken glass, a distorted frame or a lifted screen, leave the area alone and request advice. Cleaning should not create a new handling problem.
Compare call behaviour carefully
Apple notes that sound problems heard only during a call may relate to reception or the network. Compare an ordinary call with speakerphone where appropriate, and note whether the issue changes with location or caller.
For example, clear downloaded audio alongside an interrupted call suggests you should include the calling context in the enquiry. It does not prove that the phone hardware is perfect, and it does not prove the network is responsible. The value is in separating the observations.
Prepare a useful repair request
Write down the model, which audio sources fail, whether an accessory was involved and any drop or liquid history. If the problem began immediately after another repair, mention that timing without guessing at the cause.
If people cannot hear you instead, use the microphone guide. Sound entering the phone and sound coming out are separate checks. Bringing the right description helps keep the assessment focused on the fault you actually experience.
Keep these notes for your next step
Useful notes: media result, alert result, normal-call result, speakerphone result and any visible obstruction.
