The short answer
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the issue disappears, an app may be involved. Entry and exit steps vary by phone, so use your manufacturer's instructions.
Read the diagram as text
- Normal use. Write down one repeatable symptom.
- Safe mode. Use the maker's instructions for your model.
- Compare. Did the same symptom return under similar conditions?
- Next step. Review apps or seek help with the recorded result.
Know the question you are testing
Choose one problem you can describe: repeated freezing, unwanted behaviour, or an app-related interruption. Note when it happens and how you normally trigger it. "The phone is weird" is too broad to compare reliably.
Google's safe mode guide uses this mode to help identify downloaded-app problems. It is not a battery health test, a repair of damaged glass, or proof that every internal component is functioning correctly.
Prepare before entering
Find the instructions for your exact make and model. Button sequences vary, and an instruction for one phone may not apply to another. Google also notes that some Home screen widgets may be removed, so take a screenshot if you want a record of their layout.
Save open work and choose a time when temporarily unavailable apps will not disrupt something important. If the device belongs to an employer, check with its administrator before changing its operating state or removing managed software.
Make the comparison fair
Try to observe the original symptom under similar conditions. A fault that normally appears only after a long session cannot be ruled out by a momentary glance at the Home screen. Likewise, an issue inside a disabled app cannot be directly reproduced there.
If the problem does not return, downloaded software becomes a useful line of investigation. If it remains, record that too. Neither result automatically identifies a specific app or part. Google also discusses this approach in its freezing and responsiveness guidance.
Return to normal use deliberately
Use the manufacturer's exit method, commonly a normal restart. Confirm the phone is back in its usual mode before deciding an app has disappeared permanently. Do not confuse safe mode with the separate recovery menus that may contain erase options.
If recent apps are suspected, review their permissions, updates and support information. Before uninstalling an app, check whether it holds local files, messages or credentials you would need to restore. Change one item at a time and compare the same symptom again.
Bring the result to an assessment
A useful report is: "The phone freezes during ordinary use, but I did not see the freeze during this safe mode check." Include how long you observed it and which actions you could actually repeat.
If the phone has physical damage, swelling or liquid exposure, mention that first. Software isolation does not make an unsafe device safe to keep using. A reset should not be the default next step when you cannot confirm your backup.
Keep these notes for your next step
Useful notes: model, original symptom, observation conditions, result in safe mode and recent app changes.
